Some time ago, though it feels like forever, I wrote a letter to Baby Burge. In it, I called our baby “Isaac.” I’ve written before about Isaac and his parents, Abraham and Sarah from the Bible (Read Baby Names and Mountains). Their story, which begins in Genesis 12, is a record of God’s work displayed in their lives. His perfect love, provision, and timing are demonstrated throughout. Early on in our journey of growing our family, I have held on to their story and these truths about God.
Dear Isaac, my sweet, happy boy, do you know what we love about you?
Your laughter.
You chuckle. You giggle. You even snort, when Daddy tickles you.
You smile so big that the ends of your lips rise up, pushing those chubby cheeks up to your eyes and shrinking them into crescent moons.
You bring smiles to our faces. You are our sweet, happy Isaac. We love you, son.
We can't imagine life without you, but Mommy and Daddy didn't always know when or how you would come.
We prayed for you Isaac. "Lord, we place our trust in you that you will grow and care for our family in however you see fit. We are confident in you. We are sure of you. We know that your timing is best. Please help us to rest in this, Lord"
We waited for you Isaac. We didn't know when you would come. Would it be months? Years? Decades? We waited so long for you.
We didn't know how you would come. You were growing in our hearts, but would you grow in my belly? Or, would you come to us another way? All we wanted was you, Isaac.
We loved you before you came. We thought about you every day. Sometimes Mommy cried because she wanted so bad to know you. Other times, Mommy and Daddy would tell stories about you like we already knew you, and we would laugh. Our sweet, happy Isaac, you made us smile even before we held you in our arms.
Before you came, Mommy and Daddy were worried sometimes. We even got scared. But God provided for us, Isaac. God always provides.
It was hard waiting for you Isaac. There was a time when Mommy and Daddy were worried you might never come into our family. We had even asked, "What was wrong with us? Why were we having such a difficult time waiting for Isaac?" God showed us something special though. In John 9, Jesus heals a man that was born blind. The disciples kept asking him why the man was born blind. They wanted to know who made this blind man deserve to be blind. But Isaac, the disciples and Mommy and Daddy didn't understand what was taking place. In John 9:3, Jesus responds, "this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life."
Isaac, everything Mommy and Daddy went through to get you happened so that the work of God could be displayed. What God did was amazing and generous. Now, Mommy and Daddy can share our family, this display of God's love, to others and God will receive the praises and glory!
Isaac, sometimes we forget how amazing God was and is. You are a reminder that God provides. The Lord's power is beyond measure and understanding. And because of this, we can praise Him and give Him the glory for you, Isaac.
Ephesians 3:20-21 is my prayer. Lord, "to [you] who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to [you, oh Lord] be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."
Isaac, I am writing this so that Mommy and Daddy will always remember how God provides. And Isaac, I also write this to you. I want you to know how God worked in our lives. How we worked for you, Isaac. How He loves you, Isaac. We can never stop praising and glorifying Him. We shared this with you and now you get to share this with other generations. Praise God!
