A Christmas Story

12/25/2015

As we turn our thoughts toward Christmas and its true meaning, the birth of Jesus, I’ve found myself viewing the story through a different lens this year. While the birth of Jesus is still the most important aspect, I’ve given a little more attention to a character that generally gets less attention: Joseph, Jesus’ earthly or adoptive father.

We aren’t given a whole lot of detail about Joseph or who he was. However, what we are told reveals a great deal about the type of man he was. From a few short passages in Matthew, we can tell several things about Joseph: 1) he was obedient to God, 2) he cared for Jesus and Mary, and 3) he was a selfless man.  Joseph listened to and obeyed God’s direction for him concerning the child (Jesus) that God had entrusted to him

I mailed the last “In love” ornament this week!

Several months ago I never would’ve imagined the response to our adoption journey from our friends, family, coworkers, and strangers.  At the time, I was just tossing around an idea for Christmas ornaments and working on some prototypes.  There were many obstacles to the ornaments at first: charred clay (I kept one of these just for fun), our oven catching fire (while preheating to bake the ornaments of all things), and a broken arm (which makes rolling out clay next to impossible).  Finally, we took the chance and shared the “In love” ornaments with the world.

Craig thought we’d have some interest and maybe make a couple dozen.  I thought it would be a miracle if they brought in close to $2,000 in donations.  The actual response was incredible!

Now What?

On Thursday, I received a follow up e-mail from our adoption coordinator.  In it we received brief information that confirmed some of our thoughts about an opportunity we found ourselves in almost 4 weeks ago.  At that time, we were first contacted by our coordinator about a birthmother seeking to place her child- a sweet baby girl due in January- up for adoption.  Our family profile was shared with her, as well as several others’ family profiles.  It was so exciting for us!  This could be Baby Burge.  The first week went by.  No worries.  I thought.  She needs time.  Then the second and the third weeks passed.  A dose of reality set in.  This may not be Baby Burge.  We learned from Thursday’s e-mail that she’s struggling with knowing how to move forward.  It’s unlikely that this is Baby Burge.  So, now what?

Baby Names and Mountains

Craig and I have had fun discussing baby names.  He offers helpful suggestions like Beyoncé and Eustace [insert eye roll].  My solution: Name everything in the house Eustace.  You can’t call a houseplant and a kid by the same name.  You just can’t.  While we’ve had our goofy moments, something we are serious about is choosing a name for Baby Burge that has meaning.
A name can hold great meaning.  Isaac means “he laughs” and Abraham, at 100 years old, gave his son this name (Genesis 21:3).  Abraham and Sarah, who was at that time 90 years old, had waited decades for a child.  Reading Genesis 16, there is no doubt that Sarah believed she might never have any children.  Abraham too.  But here we are in Genesis 21:2, when Isaac is born “at the very time God had promised him.”
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.
 -Genesis 21:2

    An Ephesians 1:5 Blog

"In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will." -Eph. 1:5 (NIV)

I am an adopted daughter of Christ sharing how God is at work as we grow our family through adoption.

I pray that I can begin to express in words how God's been at work in our lives.  I pray that He will be glorified as we share with others.  I pray for you! I pray that as you read this you will see God at work in your own life and that  your relationship with Him will be blessed.
